Kawasaki Ninja 250R

At 5-foot-1, the new 30.5-inch seat height had me on my tippy-toes, but the bike is so light (reported 333 lbs. dry, up nearly 30 lbs) this was hardly a concern. The narrow seat certainly helps those of us who belong to the inseam-challenged group or the new rider who feels most comfortable with both feet down. Kawasaki research indicates that 62% of Ninja 250 owners are new riders, and 33% of that group is women. Being able to plant both feet firmly on the ground is one of the most cited concerns for all beginning riders who are purchasing their first bike.

Once in the saddle, the seating position is a tad sportier and more forward sloping than before, but still quite upright with an easy, comfortable reach to the high and wide bars. This makes a trip through city traffic much easier than one might be if reaching for low-slung clip-ons. Reach from seat to footpegs was so comfortable I had to make myself take note. Levers are easy to command and the feel is quick and responsive. The clutch engaged rather far out, but even with my 2.5-percentile hand, I had no problems.

New for 2008 is a large speedo right in the center, with a tach to the left and new gas gauge to the right. Apparently a gas gauge is important to Ninja 250 owners, so now they have a big juicy one. At first I thought I would miss the center tach, as my last experience with the previous model was thumb-wrestling riders at a Kawasaki-sponsored trackday to see who would get to ride the screamin' little 250s. Keeping an eye on revs is crucial when trying to ride as fast as you can on the track, not so for street riding, which is the most common use of the 250. Big speedo, good. Gas gauge, better.

While the new Ninja 250R has been a favorite among beginners, this new version was also designed to capture the heart of the more aggressive, mature rider. And, at an MSRP of just $3499 it’s right on the money.

2008 : GSX-R600

Bodywork from front to rear is completely new, giving the G6 a more contemporary countenance. A nose job is the most obvious change. A centrally located low-beam projector light is flanked by dual high-beams for a purported increase in side-area illumination. A “position lamp” is placed above the main headlight. Situated below are dual scoops for ram-air induction. Turnsignals remain neatly integrated into the rearview mirrors.

A little further back is a new gas tank that ups fuel capacity by 0.5 liter to 4.5 gallons. Below are curvy new side fairings with an X shape, while a more flamboyant tailsection includes integrated turnsignals with clear lenses. Four colors schemes are available in the U.S. The white/silver version might be my fave, and yellow/black and all-black iterations join the traditional Gixxer blue/white combo which includes a blue seat. Kudos go to Suzuki for providing a passenger seat cowl at no extra charge, unlike the other OEMs.

2009 : Yamaha WR250X

No worries about this little ripper of a motor. The 250cc liquid-cooled, DOHC engine with two titanium intake valves and two steel exhausts features a fuel-injection system that takes input from a crank sensor, intake air pressure sensor and throttle position sensor. The compact ECU also controls an EXUP exhaust valve to broaden the powerband. Valve-adjustment intervals are a lengthy 26,000 miles.

Free Tutorial: How To Creating Metallic Images In Adobe Photoshop

Artists have been simulating metal in their drawings for decades. Many painstaking hours were spent hand illustrating even the smallest metallic design. The use of the airbrush allowed artists to take the metal look to new heights, creating realistic renderings - although it was still time-consuming. Today, the tools available to computer artists have not given artist an easier method of creating the look of cold steel, but they have also cut the effort and time to a minimum.

GSX-R1000 2009

We learned only days ago in our report from Suzuki’s 2009 model line unveiling in Paris that, what is in this day and age already old news, the mighty Gixxer Thou got hit with a heavy dose of updates, to the point of being very much a new machine.

Bore and stroke of 74.5 x 57.3mm are different from the K8 model’s 73.4 x 59.0mm but still yield 999cc. A reshaped combustion chamber and cylinder head, thanks in part to a shorter intake camshaft with a relocated cam angle sensor, now sees a compression ratio of 12.8:1 vs. 12.5:1, and a lighter and reshaped airbox works with downdraft intake manifolds decreased in length by 10mm.

Titanium intake and exhaust valves are marginally larger, by 1mm each: 30 to 31mm and 24 to 25, respectively.

Harley Davidson Sportster XR1200 2009

The naked, or standard, means a lot to Europe, more than the U.S. market, if you can believe that. Want proof? Witness the apparent death of Kawasaki’s Z1000 in the U.S. after only one year’s worth of revision? In ’06, the first-gen Z1000 outsold all other sport brands and models combined in Europe according to Kawasaki. In the U.S. it was more or less a loss-leader, so it was dropped from American dealerships for ’09.
Regardless of the seeming disdain for practical, sensible, upright-but-sporty unfaired standards in the U.S., Harley heard the uproar in the Letters-to-the-Editor, chat rooms, forum feedback and straight-up complaints from U.S. riders after the XR1200 being a Europe-only model, and decided it was time to bring the XR1200 home!

Moab with the Hummer Club

The HUMMER Club, Inc (THCI) holds an event in Moab every year, sending out a call to Hummer owners from around the U.S. to congregate and traverse the slick rock. The majority of attendees drove H1 at the event this year, while a handful of H2 and H3 vehicles interjected themselves into the convoys. Some chose to stick to easier trails and enjoy the view from a safe distance, while others chose to push their trucks to the limit – or even slightly beyond. One driver rolled his H1 on to its roof early in the week. After getting the truck right side up and waiting an hour for the oil to drain back down, the truck was restarted, and that vehicle wheeled for the remainder of the week (albeit with a cracked windshield and some body damage) – a testament to the tough build of the HUMMER nonetheless.

One of the more famous trails in all of Moab is called Golden Spike, and famous Moab trail-guide Dan Mick knows the trail better than anyone else on the planet. As luck would have it, this year Mick’s birthday fell on a day when THCI was going out on Golden Spike, so the club had the privilege of going out on the trail with him during the day, and taking him out to celebrate his birthday by night. Mick is half trail-guide, half tour-guide. His voice casually rolls along over the CB broadcast as the trucks progress through the trail, providing technical information about approaching obstacles, local history (one gets the sense that the stories he tells lie somewhere between reality and folklore), and a joke for every occasion. He is so good at his job that visiting Moab without experiencing Golden Spike led by Mick would be a shame.

Rinspeed iChange Concept (2009)

With the Rinspeed iChange Concept, world premiere at the 2009 Geneva International Motor Show, the Swiss designers of Rinspeed present a "1-2-3-seater" powered by a 130kw-electric motor. The concept car's striking body structure adapts via "electronic trick-tail" to the number of passengers: while the sporty and streamlined teardrop shape seats only the driver, two more passengers may join him once the car's rear end has risen as if by magic. In the blink of an eye the full-blooded sports car turns into a compact sportsvan.

With the Rinspeed iChange Concept the automotive jack-of-all-trades Frank M. Rinderknecht and his partners aim to provide thought-provoking impulses for the automobile industry: "Thinking about variability and the constantly changing energy demand, we have created an extremely flexible vehicle." The result is a zero-emission car featuring both extremely low weight and aerodynamic drag, thus further reducing the power consumption.

For Mr. Rinderknecht the car's name "iChange" means more than a flowery phrase: "If we want to preserve our individual mobility in the future, we have to re-think our conception of cars - above all we need to accommodate the ecological aspects." The best possible answer the big automakers could find for the Rinspeed iChange Concept woud be a strong "Yes, we can!"

Ford Mustang (2010)

Muscle goes modern for 2010 as the Ford Mustang - America's favorite muscle car for 45 years straight - hits the streets with a new exterior design; new world-class interior featuring well-crafted materials and updated technology; and a V8 with even more horsepower and an even throatier signature Ford Mustang exhaust sound.

Combine those elements with the new Mustang's improved handling characteristics, more standard safety and technology features and its already-strong safety and quality performance and reputation, and it's easy to see how the muscle car known around the world delivers on the promise of fast, fun and affordable performance for a whole new era.

"More than 9 million customers have made Ford Mustang one of the world's most beloved automotive and cultural icons," said Mark Fields, Ford's president of The Americas. "Making sure this modern legend lives up to their expectations has been a driving force for the team, which went to great lengths - gathering customer input everywhere from race tracks to Main Streets in cities throughout the U.S. - working to create the best Ford Mustang ever."

For 2010, the team delivered. "The new Ford Mustang marks new levels of both power and refinement," said Paul Randle, Mustang chief engineer. "We've designed and engineered this to be the next classic Mustang that everyone talks about for years and years."
